Week 9:

Hi all,

Hope you all had a lovely weekend and enjoyed the beautiful weather on Sunday. It’s good for the soul to get outdoors and have fun! Remember to continue to wash hands regularly and to maintain the 2m physical distance.

It’s great to see so many pupils posting their work to Class Dojo.  I will be uploading work every week day. It is not necessary to complete all the work. I have included work for some of my various groups, as well as some activities that may be of interest to any 5th class student or school student alike. It is not necessary to have a printer. These activities can be completed in a copy book or adapted according to the resources you have access to. If you have any queries I can be contacted by sending a message on Class Dojo or e-mail lmckenna@bunscoilris.ie.

I am also still working on the Discovering Primary Science Award so if you complete any science experiments you can forward them to me with a short account of what you did

Stay safe everyone 🙂

RTE School Hub will be on air Monday to Friday 11a.m. – 12p.m. Make sure to tune in! School Hub as Gaeilge on TG4 also.

What Do You Need

A handful of coins, a cloth, a timer or a watch

  • Choose 5 coins from the pile and place it in a certain sequence. For example, you can line up two 50 paise coins, a 1 rupee, 2 rupees and 5 rupee coin.
  • Ask the players to look at the coins and then cover them with a cloth.
  • Ask the players to now pick up coins from the pile and arrange them in the same order as what was shown.
  • Use the timer to time each of them. The player who gets the sequence right in the shortest amount of time wins!

How to Play Pictionary

You could always go to the store and buy the official Pictionary, but if you don’t have time to get to the store, or just don’t want to spend the money, try making your own game with just a few things you already have lying around the house!

Number of players: 4+

What you need:

  • Timer
  • Paper
  • Pencils
  • Index cards
  • Dice

Setup:

  • Choose five or six categories (ex: people, places, things, animals, actions, etc.).
  • Write words of varying difficulties on each card.
  • Place cards into piles of the correct category, then shuffle the piles.
  • Assign each category a number to correspond with the dice.
  • Set out your materials, and you’re ready to start!

How to play:

  • Divide into teams of two or more, and roll a die to see who goes first. Appoint a “judge” to hand out cards and set the timer.
  • The team that starts rolls the die and receives a card from the category that corresponds with the number; the timer is set for 60 seconds, and the judge says “start.”
  • The artist has 60 seconds to draw, and the rest of the team must guess what the artist is drawing in the allotted time frame.
  • The artist may not talk, make noises, or gesture, and absolutely no letters or numbers are allowed in the pictures.
  • If guessed correctly, the team gets a point and gets to go again. If they are wrong, it’s the next team’s turn to repeat the above.
  • Set a limit to determine the winner, such as “the first team to get 25 points wins!”

Now, in order to make your own game, you’re going to need a bunch of Pictionary words. With that being said, there are three levels of difficulty in Pictionary. Words can be easy, medium, or hard. Be sure to make an even mix of the three!

Here’s a categorized list of Pictionary words that you may use:

Pizza

Pumpkin
Baby
Flower

Flying saucer
Recycle

Week 5:

Hi all,

Hope you all had a lovely weekend and enjoyed the beautiful weather on Saturday. It is so important that we get out and make the most of the fresh air when we can while remembering to stick to the social distancing and 2km rules.

I am also still working on the Discovering Primary Science Award so if you complete any science experiments you can forward them to me with a short account of what you did.

I will be contacting some parents during the week just to check in and see how everyone is doing. If any pupils would like to say hello, I would love to hear from you.

Stay safe everyone 🙂

RTE School Hub will be on air Monday to Friday 11a.m. – 12p.m. Make sure to tune in! School Hub as Gaeilge on TG4 also.

Remember Urban Rascals on Urban Gym Facebook page Tuesday and Thursday at 1.30pm.

Download Class DoJo today to keep in touch with teachers and up to date information. The first 3 full classes signed up will win a Pizza Party!

Work completed can be uploaded to your personal portfolio on Class Dojo. I would love to see your work!

Pupils, Ruby and Robbie Keogh are raising money for New Ross Community Hospital. There is a piece of art for people who have donated. Look up their Go Fund Me page if you wish to donate to such a good cause!

Activities to improve working memory:

Memory

Also known as Concentration, this card game is an old stand-by which can be adapted for all ages and abilities of children and is great for improving concentration and memory skills.

Number of Players: 2+

Age Range:

Cards:

One standard deck of cards, adapted as appropriate for age and ability (see below). You can also use pictorial cards (such as our Ghost Cards at Halloween), learning cards (for Colours, Numbers, Alphabets and so on), or make cards particularly appropriate to your child’s interests and hobbies. We also have a printable Christmas Concentration game and many Bingo Cards which can be adapated for this game, with lovely colourful pictures.

Instructions:

Select a number of pairs of cards appropriate to your child. Older children can use the whole pack of 52.

Shuffle, and spread all the cards out face down on the table between the players (you can either choose a random arrangement, or lay the cards out in grid form; the latter makes it easier to remember where cards are placed).

The object of the game is to find matching pairs. Players take it in turns to turn over 2 cards. Let all the players see them and study them. If they are not a matching pair, try to remember what and where they are, then turn them back over. Play then passes to the next player. If they are a matching pair, that player removes them from the table and keeps them, and then has another turn.

When all cards have been removed from the table, each player counts up the number of cards they have collected. The player with the most cards is the winner.

Variations:

Make a hands-on, tactile version using small household objects, as described in Under The Cups. Include one pair of “sweeties” or other treats to make the game especially exciting. The player who finds the matching pair is allowed to eat them!

Play a solitaire version:

Older children can count how many “turns” it takes them to complete the game, and try to beat their record. Younger children may find it more helpful to have a pile of buttons and two cups. Move a button from one cup to the other for every “turn” and see if they can complete the game before all the buttons have been moved across.

Leave an odd card out:

You can make the game a little harder for older children by leaving one card without it’s pair.

Activities to improve working memory:

I WENT SHOPPING…

The aim of the game is to remember as many items purchased at the shops as possible!

To play

The first player starts the game by saying, “I went shopping and bought a ____,” identifying an item they would buy.

The second player continues, “I went shopping and bought a (names the first player’s item) and a ___ (adding a new item to the list).”

Players continue taking turns to remember the items purchased in order as the list gets longer and longer. The winner is the last person who can correctly name all of the items in sequence.

Variations

This game can be adapted to many different scenarios, for example, “I went on holidays and packed…” or “I went to school and took …”

You can also adapt the game for children familiar with letters of the alphabet by requiring players in turn to name an item that begins with each letter of the alphabet. Player 1=A, player 2=B, player 3=C, etc.

We are now starting into Week 3 and I hope that everyone is keeping well. The restrictions that have been placed on us can be hard at times but we have to remember that we are all in this together. By staying at home and following the rules we are all playing our part in keeping our families and communities well. Try and look for the positives – spending time with our loved ones, learning new skills, getting the chance to read a book, complete an interesting project, dance, sing, draw, write, be creative 🙂 I have already seen some wonderful examples of how resourceful and inventive you all are. And take this time to reflect on how lucky we are. Look for small opportunities for happiness in the moment you are in right now. Take care everyone 🙂

Week 1:

I hope that everyone is keeping well. Below I will outline work daily. If you do not have access to a printer the work can be completed in a spare copy or on a sheet of paper and stapled together. Some of the activities will be written while others will be more practical. This is a difficult time for everyone. Play your part by practising good hand hygiene and social distancing. Try to get outdoors when the weather is fine – go for a walk, play outdoor games or complete a nature trail. Help out at home – set the table, empty the dishwasher or help out with younger siblings. Stay safe 🙂

There will be lots of additional resources and ideas available on the school Twitter page @bunscoilrís. My school e-mail address is lmckenna@bunscoilris.ie if you have any queries or concerns.

Take care all!
