Wednesday 6th May

Good Morning Everyone!!!!!

The sun is shining brightly through my window so I’m really looking forward to getting outside later for some fresh air and exercise. Is the sun shining in New Ross too??? I hope so.

I hope you all enjoyed your extra long weekend and are ready for a new week – its a very short week this week, it will be friday again before we know it.

So with the beginning for a new week just take some time to reflect on what has been working well for you in term of setting up and sticking to your schedule. Can you continue to keep these things going? Remember to do at least one thing every day that makes you really happy – make time for this on you schedule whatever it may be.

Are there things your are struggling with? It could be getting your maths done, fitting in some exercise, do you have enough books to read?, have you got some space to chill out?

Please let me know if there are areas you are struggling with and i can try and help you. Also let me know the things you are enjoying and finding easy about being at home.

The main thing is that you and your family are safe and happy – ‘school work’ is not supposed to cause extra pressure or upset you …….like we always say ….. JUST DO YOUR BEST!!!! And another important thing to remember to it is ok to ‘ASK FOR HELP’ if you need it. Ask your, mam, your Dad, whoever is at home with you, your sister, ask me.

Todays Activities

1. Wednesday is Connection Day. Make an effort to contact someone today outside your home. Call your cousin, your uncle, your aunt or your grandparents. It would be great if you have contact details for any of your school friends.

Play ’20 questions’ with them. ……..Do you remember how to play?

  • Think of a famous person in your head – don’t tell anyone who it is!!!!!!!!
  • Your opponent has 20 question they can ask you to try and guess your person.
  • You can only answer yes/no to the questions.
  • Here are some examples of questions that might be asked

Are you a man?

Are you Irish?

Are you American?

Are you a famous singer?

Are you a famous actor?

Do you have brown hair?

  • Remember to keep count of how many question are being asked.
  • If your opponent can guess who you are within 20 questions they get a point. If they don’t the point goes to you.
  • Swap rolls and let the other person pick someone to be and you try and guess.
  • HAVE FUN.

2. Lego Challenge – Lets continue our Lego Challenge to use your hands, work on your concentration and focus, following instructions and use  your imagination.

3. Also today……as we have been doing……

Decide on the best time that suits you both to call back for your review. After you have watched the movie give another call and discuss your thoughts on the movie. Did you like why/ why not.?? Where was the movie set? Who were the main characters? Were they goodies/baddies?

What snacks did you have at your house for the movie?

D.E.A.R.

Today is National Drop Everything and Read – this is something we do in school regularly so the children are familiar with the term and its a nice practice to continue at home. The idea is simply to drop everything and pick up a book and read or be read to 15-20 mins. Today we will aim to do it at 12 o’ Clock – so just after Home School Hub.

Keep an eye on class dojo for more information.

Please send your pictures to me by email or through Class dojo

Wednesday 22nd April

Good Morning All

The weather forecast for today is great so try and get outside and get some fresh air if you can – it really does lift your mood and put a smile on your face.

Feelings/Emotions

As feelings and emotions may be running high at the moment here is something that may help. This is something all the children are familiar with. In Carrickmore we use ‘Zones of Regulation’ to explore our feeling and how we can regulate ourselves. The idea is that our feelings are all in 4 different coloured ‘Zones’ Blue, Green, Yellow and Red. We all drift in and out of the different zones and feel these emotions at different time throughout any given day. There is no bad zone, there are no emotions we shouldn’t be feeling of should ignore. IT IS OK TO FEEL A WHOLE RANGE OF EMOTIONS. Our aim however is to recognise our feelings and emotions and ultimately get back to the ‘Green Zone’ By checking in with ourselves, acknowledging what we are feeling and use some strategies to return to green. Everyone is individual so talk about what may help you return to’GREEN’

Today’s Activities

1. Wednesday is Connection Day. Make an effort to contact someone today outside your home. It would be great if you have contact details for any of your school friends -Maybe video call them so you can see them – ask them how they are getting on? Are they missing school? Maybe they are happy to be at home? Play a game – I like to play i-spy – Pick something you can see in the other persons screen – you can use letters or colours. ‘i spy something beginning with ‘b” or i spy something thats ‘green” Its a bit of fun. Have you any other ideas for game to play with your friends?

Monday 20th April 2020

Good Morning to you all and welcome back to ‘school’. I hope you all enjoyed your Easter Break even though it may have been a little different this year to other years. I definitely enjoyed the sunshine and managed to get out for a nice walk everyday – while sticking within 2km of my home and practicing social distancing of course.

Some things to remember for the week:

**Remember your schedule, your meditation, your exercise, and a space and time to just chill and relax**

Here again are some resources that may help you.

Schedules are so important – They give us some sense of control and what to expect from our day. The above schedule is just and example, adapt this to what will work for you and your family as every home is different. Remember nothing ‘ needs’ to be done – whatever works best for you and your family is the right way to do it.

Do remember to allow time for RTE Homeschool Hub everyday 11am-12pm and Urban Rascal every Tuesday and Thursday at 1.30pm.

Keep the schedule somewhere visible so everyone in your  home can see it and know what is happening for the day.

Here is a social story which may help ease any little worries or anxieties your child may have. Again add anything that your child may be particularly struggling with. i.e. ‘I will do my best with my school work – if I am finding something hard that’s ok … don’t worry. I can ask (mam??) for help or teacher will help me when I get back to school’  Please e-mail or contact me through class dojo if you need help with this.
Keep this story somewhere it can easily be seen and read when needed.

In Carrickmore we often read the book ‘The Magic Moment’ by Niall Breslin. It give us a little trick to use when we are worried about something. Here’s a link to Bressie, the author, reading the story. It will be familiar to you all and i think you will enjoy it.

Kids Mindfulness Bonus episode – Reading of 'The Magic Moment'

How is everyone doing? So many of you who are doing the kid's mindfulness classes each week have asked me to do a reading of #themagicmoment. Here you go.When you scared or feeling sadA little bit angry, a little bit mad,Just slow down and start to breathe,In and out ten times with easeThink of something that makes you smileand hold those thoughts for a little whileThen squeeze your fingers really tightAnd your magic moment will shine so bright. Enjoy

Monday 30th March 2020

Good morning everybody!
Hope you all had a great weekend and ready for a new week!

A few things to highlight to you today.
1. RTÉ are starting the their new school programme ‘Home School Hub’ today so please check that out – it’s on  from 11am – 12pm.
2. Remember Urban Rascals are running our school fitness classes again this week – Tuesday and Thursday at 1.30pm. There are lots more great prizes to win this week if you take part. Join in on Urban Gym Facebook page and post your pic after your workout.
3. Class Dojo has been really successfull and is a great way to stay in contact and communicate. Please sign up if you haven’t done so already. Please contact me if you need help setting up.
4. You should have gotten a text about out school meals. A box of food will be available from school this week. The box may contain rice, pasta, fruit, and non-perishable foods. Please check out our school Facebook page or text the school mobile on 086-0211338 if you would like to avail of this.

Let’s make this a great week?

Have a think about last week…….. how did it go?

What did you like? What did you not like?

Did you get enough exercise? Did you take time to do things you like?
Did you take time to relax and focus on your feeling?

If it all went well ….great keep it up!!
If not what do you need to do to make this week better?
**Remember your schedule, your meditation, your exercise, and a space and time to just chill and relax**

Here again are some resources that may help you.

Schedules are so important – adapt this to what will work for your family. Remember nothing ‘ needs’ to be done – whatever works best for you and your family is the right way to do it.

Keep this story somewhere it can easily be seen and read when needed.

https://www.unicef.org/coronavirus/6-ways-parents-can-support-their-kids-through-coronavirus-covid-19

Check out the worry envelope exercise below to do with your child if you think it may help. Feel free to email me or message on class Dojo if you have any questions.

Minister for Health Simon Harris is also answering questions from kids. This is being done through News2Day the kids news on RTE. Email any questions for the Minister  to them on news2day@rte.ie including parent/guardian contact details.

4.. Try out some of these little tricks to help you if you have any worries!!!

Here is also a little trick to help with worries……….its called ‘My worry envelope for stubborn

    Worries

. Talk to an adult  and write down your worry and put it in a special envelope

. The worry envelope is super cool as it  keeps the worry safe so you don’t have to carry it around

. Anytime the worry pops into my head i can say ‘The worry is in the envelope, it is safe there. Until i take it out again, for that worry I don’t care’

. You can take the worry out and talk about it at a suitable time, maybe over dinner, just before bedtime?? ……it just means you are not carrying it around all day

. And sometimes something really special happens………Sometimes you will get used to not having that worry in your head that after awhile you wont bother taking it back out!!!!

. When this happens you can take it out of the envelope and tear it up!!!!!!

. When you tear up a worry and throw it in the bin, you will feel extra super proud of yourself and little more confident too!!!!!

You can decorate your special worry envelope however you like …….make it really unique as its just for you.!!!!

Meditation/Relaxation: Listen to a meditation app www.headspace.com/meditation/kids  or check out these

challenges

  1. At the same time of every day, think of one thing to be thankful for
  2. Lie comfortably on your back on the floor. Move your attention around your body by tensing and clenching your muscles and then relaxing them. Hunch your shoulders, then let them go. Make your hands into fists then tighten the muscles in your arms before relaxing them. Continue to move around your body repeating this process.
  3. Lie with your back on the floor and place a soft toy on your tummy. Breathe in and out slowly and deeply and try to concentrate on the way your toy rises and falls with your breathing
  4. Sit in a room with your eyes closed. Ask someone else to spray a perfume or deodorant at the other side of the room and, keeping your eyes closed, try to notice the exact moment when the smell reaches you

If you tried them, how did they feel???

Keep a journal and write down one thing you are thankful for each day – you can do this in your copy or type it out.

A simple sentence like  ‘Today I am thankful for’

Do you have somewhere to go to ‘chill out’ – Set up a space in the house where you can go just to be alone and chill out for a few mins. Set up a little den with a blanket and some cushions and toys you like. Add some music and nice soft lights if you have then.

Hi All

Hope you are all well. I am just adding some extra activities in line with what your child would do with me in Carrickmore. You should get a text to say which colour your child is and if you then click in you will get their activities- hopefully it works!!!!!!! – they can also access thier mainstream class teachers pages and work from there too. We will start out easy. There are also just some general ideas here to keep you all busy. The main thing is to keep yourself and your family safe and well – try to get moving and keep active as much as possible.

As we all know very well routine is so  important. Above is just a example/guide of how to put some structure into the day when kids are off school. Please adapt it to suit your family and use as a visual guide for your child if you feel it will help.
